American Legion plans Annandale activities for Veterans Day

American Legion Bicentennial Post 1976 will commemorate Veterans’ Day, Nov. 11, with two ceremonies in Annandale, reports the post’s service officer, Marv Rodney.

At 9 a.m. next Thursday, members of the post will conduct a short ceremony at the cemetery behind the Annandale United Methodist Church on Columbia Pike and place flags on the graves of veterans. Church members and relatives of those buried there will also take part. “It’s a very patriotic and intimate ceremony,” Rodney says.

Distracted Driving Awareness & Summonses on the Rise

From the Fairfax County Police Department:

            In an effort to increase public awareness on the dangers of distracted driving, police launched an intensive enforcement and education effort September 10; and they’re getting results.

            There was a 66 percent increase in citations written for failure to pay full time and attention (and texting while driving) in 2010 compared to the same time period in 2008. Police have issued 7,165 summonses for these offenses this year compared to 4,305 in 2008.

Use Caution When Burning Candles

The following was sent to us by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department:

Candles can provide ambiance and add warmth and coziness to a home. Candles are also often used when severe weather causes a power outage, leaving homeowners in the dark. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, approximately 17,400 candle-related fires occurred in homes annually. Approximately 180 deaths and 1,575 injuries are attributed to candle-related fires. On average, one home candle fire is reported every 34 minutes.

     The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department recommends residents use products such as battery-operated or electric candles and flashlights. If residents elect to use open-flame candles, follow these recommended safety tips:

Police Looking For Armed Robbers

MERRIFIELD, Va. (WUSA) --Two men, armed with handguns, robbed a thrift store Tuesday morning, police said.

It happened at the Unique Thrift store on 2956 Gallows Road at 7:30 a.m., Fairfax County Police said.

The masked men came in through the back entrance and ordered everyone in the store to get on the floor. Store workers handed over the cash and the men ran away, police said.


The first suspect was described as black, about 5 feet 9 inches to 5
feet 11 inches tall, 190 to 200 pounds, wearing a black jacket. The
second suspect was described as black, about 6 feet 1 inch to 6 feet 4
inches tall, 240 to 260 pounds, wearing a gray sweat shirt, police said.

What's For Dinner Gerry?

Today Fairfax County residents had to choose between 11th District incumbent U.S. House Rep. Gerald "Gerry" Connolly and Republican Keith Fimian, who was Connolly's challenger in the 2008 election. Both Fimian and Connolly have stated that they are not taking this year's race for granted.

Voter turnout was particuarly important to both candidates today. As we all patiently wait for the election poll results to come in, Connolly's campaign headquarters at the Fairview Park Marriott of Falls Church, VA opens up the bar and the dinner buffet line to pass the time.
