Increased Traffic Expected in Annandale This Weekend

The KORUS Festival in Annandale this weekend is expected to affect pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the following areas:

Little River Turnpike (Rt. 236), John Marr Dr, Backlick Road, and Columbia Pike.

Fairfax County Police and Auxiliary Officers have been assigned to assist with security and traffic. BRAC Building To Bring 'Chaos' To I-395 Commute

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) -- A rush hour nightmare is predicted when the new Department of Defense Building opens along I-395 in Alexandria next year.

The building, part of the BRAC realignment plan, will house 6,400 employees, but it was built no where near a Metro station.

Several studies show the influx of cars will add two hours to everybody's commute along the corridor.

"We have impending chaos here. It's the military's fault. They never should have located a building on I-395 and Seminary Road without building the proper infrastructure," said Representative Jim Moran.

Moran has a bill that restricts the Army from building more than one-thousand parking spaces there to force them to provide a bus service for their employees.

It passed the house, and is in the Senate.

Virginia Democrat Opposes Plan To Raise Taxes On Wealthy

FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA) - When the President came to a Fairfax neighborhood this week, he chose a place where a tax increase on the wealthiest Americans may not go over well.

"I'm not sure if I'm in favor of it," said Katie Hesford.

Republican Chris McCloskey who wore an anti-Obama t-shirt said, "I want to see the Bush era tax cuts extended."

The average annual household income in Fairfax County is over $100,000. And though couples pulling in $250,000 or more may not consider themselves wealthy in this high-cost-of-living region, they are. And they'd pay more taxes if the President has his way. But the President won't have Democrat Congressman Gerry Connolly's vote.

"Now is not the time to be raising taxes on any income group," said Connolly.

Rep. Connolly says raising taxes on the wealthy could hurt the economy, which is what the republicans have been arguing.

Festival showcases Slavic food, music, and crafts

The Annual Slavic American Festival Sunday featured live music, carnival games, bingo, a craft fair, and a rummage sale, but it seems most people came for the food. Among the menu items: holupki (cabbage rolls in tomato sauce), haluski (noodles with cabbage and butter), pirohi (potato and cheese dumplings with butter and onions), kielbasa, and potato pancakes.

The festival, sponsored by the Epiphany of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church on Woodburn Road in Annandale, has been going on for 37 years.

Annandale student Mitchell Frank reaches third round at U.S. Open

Very few top athletes stick around their hometowns once they hit the big time. Junior tennis star Mitchell Frank is an exception. Frank, age 16, grew up in Annandale and still lives here with his parents.

He attended Wakefield Forest Elementary and Poe Middle School and is a senior at Annandale High School. Although with his busy tournament and training schedule, he takes all his classes online - English, geosystems, world history I, and AP statistics. Frank says he devotes five and a-half hours a day to tennis practice and fitness.

After competing in the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., earlier this week, Frank was back in Annandale, attending the Atoms home football game Friday night with his friends.

The future may be unpredictable, but it can be planned

By Dan McKinnon, chair, Annandale Central Business District Planning Committee

Last month the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors (BOS) approved a Comprehensive Plan amendment for downtown Annandale, or what is called the Annandale “Community Business Center” (CBC).

As a result of concerns about the lack of downtown renewal by the Annandale Central Business District Planning Committee, the BOS directed county planning and transportation staffs to perform a study of the area seeking, first, plan language that might encourage redevelopment, and second, language that would address the traffic issues of Little River Turnpike. Study results were briefed to community focus groups and endorsed by the Planning Commission. The product is unique and a first for Fairfax County.
