Don’t Miss The Fun of Groundhog Day
Don’t Miss The Fun of Groundhog Day

From Fairfax County Park Authority:

Groundhog Day is almost upon us.  According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter will soon end. If on the other hand, it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly "see its shadow" and retreat back into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks.

Although the national celebration held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania will be held on February 2, 2011, local celebrations will take place on Sunday, January 30 at Hidden Oaks Nature Center and Frying Pan Farm Park.

Prepare for Groundhog’s Day with costumed characters Willard and Mother Nature as they entertainingly discuss nature’s true weather forecasters at Hidden Oaks Nature Center from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. with songs, crafts and an interactive play.  Participants can rehearse shadow checking with Willard outdoors. The cost is $5 per child ages three to ten.  Register online at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/parktakes  or call 703-222-4664.  For more information contact the site directly at 703-941-1065.
