FCPS Encourages Students to Adopt 9-5-2-1-0

From Fairfax County Public Schools:

As part of its 2011-12 school year goals to encourage good nutrition and physical activity among students, Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is promoting the 9-5-2-1-0 program in October.This program promotes 9 hours of sleep, 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, 2 hours of screen time, 1 hour of physical activity, and 0 sugary drinks for elementary school-age students each day.

In conjunction with the 9-5-2-1-0 campaign, FNS is introducing students to new fruits and vegetables and purchasing locally-grown seasonal produce whenever possible to serve in schools. These activities complement the Give Me 5! Colors That Jive! nutrition message that encourages students to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables of different colors in order to get proper nutrition. FNS is also working with schools to use produce that is grown in school gardens in school menus.

Students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will observe National School Lunch Week October 11-14 with a focus on" Let's Grow Healthy," a campaign to help students learn where food comes from and how it helps them grow strong and healthy.

Learning How To Balance Our Energy

     Socrates said, “the unexamined life is not worth living.”  While I always recommend positive self-talk, (the examined life is a joyful experience, for example), Socrates is suggesting that we step back from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life and have a look at who we are and what we have become. Perhaps you will agree, the wise teacher has a point! Where, you might ask, do we start?

     A great starting place for self-examination is comes in the form of an intriguing question:  Are we human beings or human doers?  Sometimes, I believe we should call ourselves human doers because it feels like we are always in action… we are doing this and doing that.  We all have such busy lives – going to meetings, conference calls, our kids’ sports games, carpooling, running errands, and so on…like well-oiled machines.

Using Acupuncture to Boost Fertility. What's new in treating infertility may surprise you!

McLean, VA – September 20, 2011 - The problem of infertility can be emotionally and financially draining, and it is also far from rare – with fully 10-15% of couples in the US having difficulty conceiving.  But what’s new in the arena of infertility treatment may surprise you: According to Lisa Lilienfield, MD, at The Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine in McLean, Virginia, “Medical research demonstrates that acupuncture is clinically effective in boosting fertility.”

“Overall, the research is very strong,” Dr. Lilienfield explains. “In general, a woman may be up to 65% more likely to become pregnant if she is receives acupuncture combined with IVF treatments, as compared to receiving IVF treatments alone.”

So, how does this procedure, which has been used for thousands of years to alleviate pain and boost the body’s immune system, help to improve fertility in women? In three ways, explains Dr. Lilienfield:

Meditation, which can be practiced in many different forms, has been used for thousands of years to benefit the mind, body and soul. Now there is a growing body of medical research proving that meditation not only modifies brain function, it can actually change the way we experience physical pain.

A recent study reported in the Journal of Neuroscience showed that patients who had received only a little more than 60 minutes of meditation training were able to dramatically reduce their experience of pain. Patients experienced a reduction in "pain intensity" of about 40 percent and a reduction in "pain unpleasantness" of 57 percent. According to the lead author of the study, Fadel Zeidan, "Meditation produced a greater reduction in pain than even morphine or other pain-relieving drugs, which typically reduce pain ratings by about 25 percent."

Quieting the Chatter

If you’re familiar with Self Talk, you probably read or heard me or others refer to it as our thoughts, inner dialogue, or Board of Directors.  

Our Self Talk can get quite loud at times, especially during times of transition and stress. Our Self Talk is then moving at turbo speed.  So how can we calm down our thoughts when we lead such active, full lives? How can we decrease the overload and stress? How do we quiet down the chatter?

Since having thoughts or inner conversations is part of being human, and because our lives are so busy, here are some ways to help you quiet the mind:
