Mollie Loeffler of Mason District named Fairfax County Citizen of the Year

The Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations has named Mollie Morison-Loeffler, a community leader in the Mason District, the Federation’s 2010 Citizen of the Year. The federation will honor Loeffler at its annual Citizen of the Year banquet, co-sponsored by Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC), at the Tysons Crowne Plaza on Sunday, May 15.

Firefighters Check Smoke Alarms, Provide Home Escape Plans

On Saturday, March 12, 2011, from 9 a.m. to noon, firefighters will canvas homes in selected neighborhoods throughout Fairfax County, checking for working smoke alarms, and providing family fire escape plans for residents.

Neighborhood forum will focus on blighted properties in Mason District

If there are homes like these in your neighborhood, and you want to do something about it but don’t know how, the Mason District Council’s Roundtable Discussion on Property Maintenance is for you. This session, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mason District Government Center (6507 Columbia Pike, Annandale), will bring together community leaders and county officials to discuss what can be done about derelict and blighted properties.

The Capital Home and Garden Show Gears Up for a Big Weekend

Preparations are well underway at the Dulles Expo Center for this weekend's Capital Home & Garden Show. The show starts this Friday, February 25th and runs through Sunday, February 27th. This marks the 15th Capital Home and Garden Show and show manager, Alyson Caplan, is looking forward to hosting her first spring show after holding a successful fall show this past September. “This is the time of year people are planning spring projects,” said Caplan.

Be Prepared: Recommendations for Your Emergency Supply Kit

Fairfax County urges you to assemble an emergency kit and include these basic items:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Local maps
