VATF-1 Receives National Defense Industrial Association Award

The National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) has selected Virginia Task Force 1 (VATF-1) to receive the America Secure Award in recognition of their contributions in making the United States a more secure and prosperous nation. The NDIA will present the award at a luncheon, Tuesday, February 8, 2011, 11:30 a.m., at the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department’s Academy, 4600 West Ox Road, Fairfax.   

Last January, Virginia Task Force 1 deployed two urban search and rescue teams to Haiti in response to the devastating earthquake near Port-au-Prince. They assisted in the rescue of 16 people during their 14-day deployment. 

As Northern Virginia Grows, So Does The Commonwealth

(USA TODAY) -- The population contrasts between Northern Virginia and the rest of the state widened dramatically in the past decade as the state's northern counties outside Washington exploded in size and diversity, 2010 Census data show.

More than half the growth came from Northern Virginia.

Public Meeting Scheduled for Bicycle Master Plan

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will hold a public meeting on Thursday, February 17, 2011 to present the final draft of the Tysons Corner Bicycle Master Plan, which is Phase I of the County Bicycle Master Plan document and maps. The plan reflects recommendations solicited from residents at a previous public meeting. The next step in the process is formal adoption from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

I recently had the opportunity to talk to the Salahis, the couple that most of our country knows as the "White House Crashers.”  During the rare but intimate interview, we siphoned through the rumors surrounding the media frenzy; from being the 3rd most hated housewife to the allegations of fraud and bankruptcy.   Michaele also shared details surrounding her 17+ year battle with the relapsing-remitting form of Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS), which about 80% of people suffer from during the initial phase of Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

A majority of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) families and employees support opening schools one week before Labor Day, beginning with the 2012-13 school year, as indicated in a recent FCPS survey.  

            “There are several reasons to open schools before Labor Day, the most important of which is to provide additional instructional time for teachers and students before Standards of Learning (SOL) testing takes place,” said FCPS Superintendent Jack D. Dale.  “Our parents and employees are solidly behind making this change.  It’s time for the state to address the wishes of our community to start school earlier.

Accidental Annandale House Fire

From Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department:

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire Saturday, January 29, 2011, at approximately 3:25 p.m. in the Annandale area of Fairfax County. The single family home is located 9204 Kristin Lane.

Firefighters encountered fire and smoke coming from the rear and sides of the one-story home upon arrival. Firefighters contended with several downed power lines while fighting the fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire in approximately 20 minutes. Smoke alarms activated and provided early warning for the occupants. The early warning allowed the three adults to escape unharmed.  The occupants have been displaced. Red Cross support was declined.

Damage is estimated at $375,000.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. An electrical anomaly in the office area caused the fire.
