Annandale High School PSAT Exams Coming Soon

The following was sent to us by Annandale High School PTSA:

On Wednesday, October 13th, the PSAT will be administered to all 9th, 10th and 11th graders. Seniors will not attend school that day. Following the PSAT exam, all underclassmen will be released to go home at 11:00. To receive your student’s PSAT score report, 9th and 11th graders must pay a fee of $17 ($9 for students on free/reduced lunch). FCPS covers the PSAT fees for 10th graders, so they do not need to pay for their exam results. Payment can be made in the cafeteria during all four lunch periods from October 1st to October 12th. PSAT exams will not be sent to Educational Testing Service for scoring unless the fee is paid by Oct. 12th. We cannot accept payments after Oct. 12th. Contact: Marcelo Valencia at 703.642.4127

Local Teens Focus on Education in West African Coastal Nation

Two local teens are focusing in on building education, but reaching much further than education for their Annandale classmates. 16 year-old Bashir Warsame and 17 year-old Sahnun Mohamud are focusing on education in Somalia.

The two high school boys are focusing on building an educational program in the West African coastal nation of Somalia. This happens to be the home of many of their relatives and the birthplace of their parents. While both of the boys have not visited, they are aware that the education system there has been nearly destroyed because of war. One goal of their education program is to help prevent young child from being soldiers.

Warsame and Mohamud hope that have two schools established by 2011 and they have raised around $4000 thus far. The Loudoun County-based Rotary Club has donated $600 of these funds, while smaller contributions have come from local family members, friends of the boys and community members.
